Erja Lyytinen
Since first entering a recording studio some 15 years ago, singer/guitarist Erja Lyytinen has become a bona fide star in her homeland and a fixture on the international music scene. In that time, "the Finnish slide goddess" (The Blues Magazine) has recorded in places as diverse as Helsinki, London and Memphis, earning numerous accolades along the way. Rooted in both traditional and modern blues, she successfully blends styles like jazz, pop, soul and rock into a sound all her own. Celebrated slide guitar master Sonny Landreth, upon discovering Lyytinen's music recently, remarked: "I sure enjoyed her guitar skills. She’s obviously made a big name for herself. Things are going well for her and for good reason." Born into a musical family in the town of Kuopio, Lyytinen quickly emerged as an artist to watch in her native country. She recorded her international debut Pilgrimage after signing with Germany's prestigious Ruf Records label in 2005. The 2006 Blues Caravan tour gave audiences in Europe and the United States a first taste of her spirited live performances. The solo follow-up Dreamland Blues took her back to the USA to record with David and Kinney Kimbrough (sons of Mississippi blues legend Junior Kimbrough). After two years on the road, she returned with Grip of the Blues in 2008, mixing hard-edged blues with modern R&B. Her 2010 release Voracious Love was even more adventurous: The lavishly orchestrated "Bed of Roses" featuring contributions from Marco Hietala (Nightwish) on vocals and Apocalyptica cellist Paavo Lötjönen – showed that Lyytinen is unafraid to push the stylistic envelope. With 2013's Forbidden Fruit, she returned to more familiar territory. Canada's Blues Underground Network chose The Sky Is Crying as Best European Blues Album and Best Tribute Album of 2014. It also placed in the top three international albums of 2014 as chosen by writers at Britain's Blues Matters, who also honored Erja as the #2 international solo artist. The Elmore James tribute The Sky Is Crying proved to be a breakthrough. Released in 2014, it was universally hailed as her best and bluesiest recording to date. This collection of stripped-down, old-school blues convinced even the most discerning listeners that Lyytinen's feel for the blues runs deep and that as a slide player, she has few peers. Live in London, a sizzling live set of Elmore James covers and original material released a year later, culminated with Erja being voted the #1 international solo artist by Blues Matters and Artist of the Year at the Finnish Blues Awards. On 7th April, Erja released her 10th studio album, Stolen Hearts, mixed by Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones). .... more info

Lucy Spraggan
For Lucy Spraggan, 2017 has already been a year to remember. The singer-songwriter has already netted her fourth top 40 album and followed that success with a huge tour across the UK and Europe.  Described as ‘a triumph’ by The Sun, I Hope You Don’t Mind Me Writing was released in January 2017, charting at number 12 in the Official Top 40 Album Chart. It was the second release under her own label, CTRL Records. Frequently recognized as one of the leading lights in the LGBT community, Spraggan has managed to build her fanbase to a new high, with more than 12,000 tickets sold for her recent Dear You tour. Lucy’s festival season is looking equally busy with shows confirmed at some of the UK’s leading festivals. Lucy appeared on the X Factor in 2012, since then her audition video has been viewed more than 40 million times. She achieved the unprecedented success of securing a top 20 single (Last Night) and top 40 album (Top Room at the Zoo) while still competing on the TV show. She was also the most Googled musician of 2012, Lucy immediately signed to Columbia and her debut album Join the Club was a top-ten success. Her next record We Are was released on her own label, after Spraggan opted to take the independent route. The album just missed out on a top twenty position. Lucy’s music-writing career began with Don Maclean and Kirsty McColl as her major influences, embellished with the folk riffs of Peter, Paul and Mary and taking on the punchy riffs of traditional R and B. Her name is now synonymous with the cross-border sound she calls AFLOP; the melodic middle ground where pop and acoustic folk meet, the toe-tapping interpretations of classic sounds and the harmony-heavy ballads that she pulls from modern rhythm and blues, turning the rattle of rap into sing-along folk-style numbers that are hard to forget. After releasing four albums in five years Lucy is probably due a rest, but she refuses to let up and the writing process is already underway for album number 5. Her live calendar is looking busier than ever too with another tour planned for the Autumn. Watch this space!  .... more info

“As soon as you see five lads all clad in what appears to be the current trend, you immediately think you’re about to watch a newer version of The Strokes. When three of the five lads pick up guitars you start to wonder, could this be The Maccabees. But when Seegulls start playing, you’re aware that it’s them, it could only ever be them.” ~ The Pentatonic

Guided by the voice of God (Lee Majors), they have made it their sacred quest to reintroduce the world to their forgotten childhood, by assaulting them with powerful, mesmerising, dirty and sexual versions of Jamie and the Magic Torch, The Littlest Hobo, Thundercats and many other classic themes from 1980s television. This is their fight, their calling, their honour.

The Fugitives

The Fugitives last played at Upton Village Hall in November 2015, and when contacted by the band about a slot on their 2017 tour we had to sign them up again.  They are a quite outstanding indie folk group with superb musicianship and terrific vocal harmonies, coupled with a great rapport with the audience.

Described as ‘the missing link between Leonard Cohen and The Pogues’, they have been nominated for Best Vocal Group at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Best Roots Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards, opened for Canadian folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie and also played a slot at Glastonbury Festival.

Ruts DC
The Ruts DC live show consists of songs representing their many phases - the more recent ‘Rhythm Collision Vol.2’ - the critically acclaimed ‘Animal Now’ and of course, classic versions of Ruts songs ‘Babylons’ Burning’,  ‘Staring at the Rude Boys’, ‘Jah War’ and others. The two remaining original Ruts members - Segs Jennings and David Ruffy - provide an exciting powerhouse rhythm section for new addition Leigh Heggarty to excel on guitar.  They released a ‘LIVE ON STAGE’ album last year and their book,  'Love in Vain' - the story of The Ruts and Ruts DC written by Roland Link and edited by Paul Trynka, is out now.  Ruts DC were formed in 1980 by guitarist Paul Fox, bassist John 'Segs' Jennings and drummer David Ruffy. With vocalist Malcolm Owen they had previously been The Ruts, one of the best-loved bands of the punk rock era, releasing several fine singles (including 'Babylon's Burning' which earned them a silver disc) and two much-acclaimed albums 'The Crack' and 'Grin And Bear It'. Musically they were always more ambitious than many of their contemporaries, mixing reggae and rock in a manner that still influences musicians today; lyrically they reflected their uncompromising support for causes such as Rock Against Racism. Following Malcolm's untimely death the three musicians regrouped, adding the musical term D.C. (from the Latin for 'from the beginning') to the name. Despite critical acclaim the band folded in 1983, although on the 16th of July 2007 The Ruts played together one more time when with U.S. punk hero Henry Rollins on vocals Paul, Segs and Dave reunited for an emotional performance at the Islington Academy. With Paul suffering from incurable lung cancer it was an evening which also featured many of their punk contemporaries and which will live long in the memories of all who were there. In the interim years Segs and Dave have worked separately and together with some of the biggest names in the music industry – in 2010 they got together to write Rhythm Collision Vol.2 then in 2011 Ruts DC returned to the stage. Now, in 2017, Segs handles the lead vocal / frontman duties with panache and respect while Ruffy sings backing vocals as well as holding down the perfect beat. Sounding fresh and with the songs still proving to carry an important message in these current times. The Ruts DC show is a must see.  .... more info
